What are Heat Pumps?

Before we look at their benefits, let’s begin by looking at what heat pumps are. Heat pumps are heating and cooling systems that work by collecting air from either outside or the ground, which is then used to heat your home. Their cooling feature works in a similar way to produce the opposite effect. So, they don’t generate heat like gas boilers or even electrical heating systems, they extract it and move it from one place to another.

What are Gas Boilers?

On the other hand, gas boilers use natural gases supplied from power stations to generate heat. They are commonly considered to be traditional heating solutions, having been used throughout homes for decades. In fact, as of 2023, 23 million homes have gas boilers installed. However, it’s important to note that these systems are becoming less favoured due to the amount of carbon emissions they emit and the impending gas boiler phase-out by the UK government proposed for 2025.

Installation Cost

When it comes to the installation cost, heat pumps have a higher initial investment, which varies depending on the type of system you opt for. This is because they are much more complex systems that need to be installed by qualified technicians. There are two main types of heat pumps, ground source and air source. The difference lies in where the air used to heat your home is sourced from. Whereas air source heat pumps can cost anywhere between £8,000 to £18,00, ground source heat pumps can set you back £14,500 to £25,00. This is because it also involves a borehole installation to extract the air from the ground. Not only does it have a much longer timeframe, but it is also more expensive.

The good news about these systems is that the government have set up schemes and funding to help homes decrease their carbon emissions and transition away from non-renewable energy sources. The boiler upgrade scheme grants homeowners up to £5000 towards the costs involved in upgrading an existing system.

However, with gas boilers, it’s a different story. The installation process is relatively straightforward and can cost as little as £600. Although the exact costs will depend on the size, model and type of boiler installed, their installation costs are significantly lower.

Running Costs

Despite their initial investment, running costs for heat pumps are generally cheaper, bringing in a 27% saving compared to gas boilers. This is because they don’t generate heat like traditional heating systems do, this is taken and converted from the external environment. Their high efficiency also plays an important factor in this as well as their low electricity usage. Although gas boilers are still cheaper to run than electrical heating systems, heat pumps take the win with this one.

Maintenance and Repairs

The maintenance and repair costs between heat pumps and electrical heating systems are roughly similar. However, it’s important to note that with gas boilers scheduled to be phased out in 2025, this will likely increase their maintenance costs. The same can also be said of their repair costs. Additionally, after 2035 if your gas boiler breaks down this will no longer be replaced with a new system. You will have to upgrade to a more environmentally friendly heating solution.

Sustainability & Efficiency

Efficiency and sustainability are arguably some of the key benefits of owning a heat pump, as these systems boast an efficiency rating of 350%. They also use minimal amounts of electricity contributing further to their sustainability. On the other hand, even the most efficient gas boilers are not as efficient as heat pumps, with newer condensing models achieving roughly 90% efficiency and older models failing to hit 80%. Because gas boilers rely on high-emitting natural gasses, they contribute heavily to global warming and climate change.

Environmental Impact

Following on from their sustainability, heat pumps have a significantly lower environmental impact as they produce fewer greenhouse emissions. Gas boilers however contribute to carbon emissions, air pollution and global warming, making them the less environmentally friendly choice. Studies have shown that the UK’s average emissions from gas boilers alone produce twice as much CO2 than the combined emissions of all gas-fired power stations in the country.
