Benefits of Electric Car Charging at Home

Tired of going out of your way to find public EV charging stations, only to find they are already in use, don’t fit your vehicle or are out of order altogether? Home electric car chargers work by bringing fast EV charging to your garage and driveway, so you can charge whenever you need.

Charging your EV at home allows you to tap into the benefits of green energy, reducing your costs and helping the environment. If you have solar or wind generation at your home, you can even use energy from these systems to charge your EV.

If you install an EV charger at home, you can save costs by using cheaper energy from your own charger. Some energy companies even offer special EV charging plans, or software that allows you to charge your EV at quieter times when electricity is at its cheapest.

Charging your EV in public comes with risks, in the same way as leaving your car in a public space for a prolonged period – your vehicle is vulnerable to vandalism and theft. Electric car charging at home means your EV can be in your garage or on your driveway, safe and sound.

Home EV Charger Maintenance

Your EV charger is fully capable of staying in use for up to 10 years as long as it is regularly maintained by an engineer once per year, allowing you to avoid any unnecessary costs and the stress associated with breakdowns and emergency callouts.

We provide maintenance for all kinds of EV chargers including:

The MAC EV Maintenance Plan

MAC can provide long-term, annual maintenance for your home EV charger to ensure you can maximise its life span, retain optimal efficiency and minimise any chance of downtime due to breakdowns.

With proper maintenance your EV charger can remain highly dependable and stay in use for up to ten years whilst also reducing inefficiencies that can impact charging speed and usage costs.

You can even spread the cost of your maintenance with interest-free monthly direct debit payments, or simply opt for an upfront annual payment. It really couldn't be easier!

If your EV charger was not installed by MAC you'll be pleased to hear you can still sign up for the plan at no extra cost, although we advise you take note of your warranty as it may be different from the warranty supplied alongside our EV charger installations.

The price of EV chargers at home will vary based on the model you choose, and the complexity of your installation. Some models start at £300 to £400 for just the unit, then your installer will charge fees for the installation process too. There are also differences to consider between tethered and untethered EV chargers.

You can install an EV charger at home as long as you have a suitable off-road location such as a driveway or garage. Installation should always be carried out by a qualified engineer to keep your new device safe and compliant.

Some EVs come with a basic charger that can be plugged into a standard household socket, but for faster charging you may need a more robust, wall-mounted charger, which needs to be purchased separately.

Having a home charger is highly recommended for your convenience, though they are not strictly necessary. Having one on your property allows for charging through the night and eliminates the stress of having to leave your vehicle at a public charging station.
