How is air conditioning installed?

If you’re considering having an air conditioning installation at your home or business, you may want to have a clearer idea of the overall process so you know what to expect should you decide air conditioning is for you.

When it comes to installing a suitable system, the overall process can be summarised into five general stages starting with;

Setting  the position of the indoor and outdoor AC unit(s)

For wall and floor-wall mounted AC, the indoor unit will be affixed to the wall with a specialised concealed bracket whilst for commercial AC such as cassettes or ducted systems, the indoor unit will be positioned on the ceiling. This is also when a hole is made just large enough for the refrigerant and cable lines to be fed outside.

Installation of indoor AC unit(s)

Before any indoor units are connected to a wall or ceiling, a hole is made where the refrigerant and cable lines will be fed outside. For wall and floor-wall mounted AC, the indoor unit will be affixed to the wall with a specialised concealed bracket whilst for commercial AC such as cassettes or ducted systems, the indoor unit will be positioned on the ceiling.

Installation of connecting cable and pipework

With both the indoor and outdoor units in place, the next stage is to connect them with the refrigerant and cable lines, this will include a condensate pipe as well to drain any water generated by the heat exchanging process of the air con system. This stage is also when the electrical cable lines are connected and taken live to provide power to the system.

Test Air Conditioning system

All safety tests and checks are made including leak testing and electrical checks whilst ensuring the air con functions are responding correctly before the installation is considered complete.

The differences between Domestic and Commercial Air Conditioning Installations

Whilst the operations of an air conditioning system are largely the same whether you have an installation at your home or workplace, there are some differences that are worth bearing in mind.
These differences include;

The type of AC Units

When it comes to air conditioning systems optimised for use in a domestic household, split wall mounted air conditioning systems are ideal and the most common as a result since they are both compact and easy to use. Commercial air conditioning units on the other hand tend to have a lot more variety due to a much greater variance in the type of building as well as the heating or cooling requirements expected of the air conditioning system. This means that commercial air conditioning systems not only include wall mounted systems, ceiling cassettes and ducted systems are also common.

The size/power of the AC System

Similarly to the types of air conditioning systems being optimised for the building and operating requirements of a home or business, this also applies to their size and power as well. Residential air conditioning systems are significantly smaller as they require far less power to operate effectively. Within a commercial setting on the other hand you will encounter far greater temperature extremes which can be for a variety of reasons including the operation of heavy machinery, heating a commercial office space or cooling industrial sizes kitchens. As a result of this greater demand for cooling/heating, commercial air conditioning units will be much larger than those for domestic households as they pack a great deal more power.

Where the AC units are placed/positioned

Domestic air conditioning is generally very straightforward in terms of placement of your indoor and outdoor air conditioning units as you can choose where you would like your units to be located based on your own personal preference. Having your outdoor air conditioning units on the floor or wall outside is sufficiently secure at your home, but this is not quite the same for commercial air conditioning systems. More considerations have to be made on both space limitations at a commercial/industrial site with stricter health & safety policies also in place.

For example, outdoor air conditioning units for commercial locations are usually positioned on a roof and/or will require a cage surround to prevent tampering. Placement of indoor AC units on commercial sites are also quite different since they are most commonly seen on ceilings which can be due to space limitations but also to prevent tampering to these units as well.

Maintenance requirements

Whilst for domestic households the requirement for air conditioning maintenance is primarily linked to manufacturers warranty, this same requirement also applies to commercial AC as well. Although there is also some additional government legislation under the Energy Performance of Buildings 2012 that is linked to commercial air conditioning maintenance. This stipulates that air conditioning systems in commercial buildings require maintenance at least once every five years, and whilst this only applies to systems with a collective output over 12kw, this is applicable to many medium to large businesses that have multiple air conditioning units on the premises.

You can maximise your investment with Expert Air Conditioning Servicing and Maintenance

To prolong the lifespan of your AC system, arranging regular air conditioning servicing and maintenance will not only maximise the lifespan of your air conditioner, it will keep your energy costs down throughout the year too! As air conditioning efficiency can decrease by 5% a year or even more for older systems, it is important you maintain your system with the help of an experienced air conditioning engineer so you can make the very most of your investment.

MAC can also provide flexible payment options on maintenance packages for residential air conditioning, giving you the option to make a single payment for your annual service or in smaller monthly instalments. Alternatively, for air conditioning maintenance at multiple commercial or industrial premises, MAC can also provide options on ongoing maintenance contracts based on your needs, from ducted air conditioning systems to chillers, our mobile engineers have you covered.
