6 Air Conditioning Myths – Debunked

common air con misconceptions that could be costing you money and damaging your unit

There are a lot of misconceptions about air conditioning and how best to use it. What many people consider to be helpful tips and tricks to save on their air-con might be costing you money!

These common misconceptions can even damage your system and lead to extra repairs being needed in the long run. Here at MAC, we don’t want these air conditioning myths to cost you money or cause problems with your unit.

1: The Bigger, the Better!

A bigger air-con unit isn’t always better. The size of your air conditioning unit does matter, but maybe not in the way you think! Your unit needs to be suitably sized for your home and the room it is installed into. An oversized air conditioner would cause the compressor to turn itself on and off more frequently and cycle the air more often.

Due to this overuse, the unit will use more power and wear out more quickly, causing you to spend extra money on energy bills, repair, and even replacing the unit way before you expected!

2: Fans Keep Your Room Cooler

Some believe that a fan will keep your room cooler than air conditioning, this is simply not the case! Fans are only designed to circulate the air in a room. So, while a fan may offer short-term relief in the form of a breeze, they won’t change the climate of your room.

This is why you may stop noticing the effect of the fan after a while, or the room feels just as hot as soon as you switch it off! Similarly, adding a fan will not increase the efficiency of your air conditioner, instead, it will just increase your energy usage.

3: Thermostat Location Doesn’t Matter

The thermostat should be placed away from sources that both heat and cool a room. This is important so that it can get an average reading of the temperature and adjust the output of your air conditioning unit accordingly.

On top of this, the thermostat needs to be within easy reach and kept away from drafts and direct sunlight – as well as any other obvious sources of heating or cooling.

5: Setting Your Thermostat Very Low Saves Time & Is More Efficient

Setting your air conditioner at the lowest possible setting will not cool your room quicker. Your air conditioning unit will continue to run at the same pace either way, so it’s best to simply set your air con to the temperature you want the room to be.

Turning your air-con off when you leave the house also won’t save you money. As your air-con must work harder to reach your desired temperature when you get back.

If you want to reduce the energy used by your air-con while you’re out of the house, it’s better to instead raise the temperature on your thermostat by a few degrees. The closer your thermostat setting is to the outside temperature, the less work your air-con has to do.

6: Air Conditioning Maintenance Is Pointless

If your air conditioning is working and performing well, you may think scheduling air conditioning maintenance is a waste of time and money. This couldn’t be further from the truth. While your unit is at its most efficient, regularly scheduled air conditioning maintenance is key for keeping it this way!

If you want to stop your air-con from breaking down for as long as possible, then a check-up will save you money in the long run by reducing the need for repairs.
